Here’s the latest installment in our Make Beliefs Series created to provide comfort and hope to young and old who are feeling distressed and anxious in our too fast-changing and sometimes unforgiving world. It’s our way of making things better by helping you imagine! I created these MakeBeliefs to find hope. If you find value in the MakeBeliefs project, please share this newsletter with someone you care about.
I couldn’t stop looking at this beautiful photo of Indonesian Muslim women performing an evening prayer marking the first eve of Ramadan in Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. With their beautifully colored hijabs, they look like flowers to me as they contemplate their holy thoughts and prayers. What can they be seeing or seeking? Are their thoughts or prayers really that much different from yours?
Don't Forget About Our Poetry Contest! For Top 3 Winners, A Gift of Our Book, ‘’MakeBeliefs: A Gift for Your Imagination’’ (What More Could You Ask For?)
I recently read a poem titled ‘’Black Suit and Bow Tie’’ by Keith Hollaman; it’s a homage to the Peruvian poet Cesar Vallejo. Somehow the title stuck with me as I tried to figure out who was this person wearing a black suit and bow tie. I wanted to know more about them. Were they a student, a business executive, a parent, an artist? Why did they stand out somehow? And I thought I would open it up to you, dear reader, to write the poem that you think should go with the title, a poem in which you tell the story of the person in black suit and bow tie. If you don’t like the title, or the title doesn’t inspire you to write a poem, then I throw it up to you to come up with a different title about someone who stands out to you, such as: Girl with Flowered Dress and Amazing Red Hair or Cat with the Yellow Eyes – you get the idea. Your poem will show how words stimulate your imagination and contribute to your creativity.
For the top three winners of this poetry contest, we will print (with your permission) your poem and attribution to you, and we will mail you paper copies of our book, ‘’MakeBeliefs” A Gift for Your Imagination,’’ written by me and illustrated by Tom Bloom, who draws comic characters for MakeBeliefsComix.com. I hope this simple contest spurs you to new creativity – and fun. You can send your completed poems here to the Comment section or to me directly at billz@makebeliefscomix.com I welcome your poetry. (Don’t be afraid to try – you’ll learn something about yourself doing so.)
